Summary

'Sound Around Ards' was started in 1980 by the Newtownards Lions Club, sending out cassette tapes; these were replaced by CDs in 2010. At 'Sound Around Ards' we aim to provide news for listeners in the Ards and North Down areas, with weekly news from 'The Newtownards Chronicle' and 'The County Down Spectator'. The papers are published on Thursday and the editor (in the afernoon) selects the items to be read on Thursday evening. The recording lasts for approximately 60 minutes, divided into 40 minutes of news from the above newspapers, and 20 minutes of a 'magazine' section which might include a short quiz, a poem, a recipe, jokes, etc. The disk is copied by the technician and posted on Thursday evening so that most of our listeners will receive the disk by Friday or Saturday. The recording room is at Ards Hospital, thanks to the generosity of the EHSSB. The editors, readers and technical staff are all volunteers who give freely of their time and talents.
