What is a talking newspaper?
It’s a free service of local news recorded onto an audio format, usually a memory stick or downloaded through the internet by streaming or via an application. Whilst the Talking News and Magazine service is primarily aimed at blind and visually impaired Listeners, it is often extended to the physically disabled and others who find reading a strain such as those people who have dyslexia.
How does it work?
Once you have registered as a Listener with your local Talking Newspaper, you will receive recordings sent to you free of charge in a special plastic wallet.
How much does it cost?
Local Talking Newspapers are recorded entirely by volunteers who raise funds in their individual areas to buy equipment and plastic wallets in which to send out their recordings. The plastic wallets are delivered and returned by Free Post under the Royal Mail concession ‘Articles for the Blind’ label. There is NO cost to the Listener.
Which area does a talking newspaper cover?
Your local Talking Newspaper will usually cover an area that coincides with the circulation of the local paper from which you would take your news.
Technical
How can I listen to my talking newspaper?
The most popular method is by having recordings on a memory stick which is played via a player specifically designed for the blind and partially sighted. These can be purchased from a number of retailers, but some local Talking Newspapers provide these for free and you may also be able to obtain one from you local Association for the Blind.
If you use the internet, some Talking Newspapers can be streamed using a mobile phone or tablet provided that it is connection on the mobile phone network or through Wi-Fi.
What happens if I stop listening half way through?
The memory stick players all have a built in “bookmark” that remembers exactly where you were so the next time you start listening it starts from exactly the same place. The same is true for the internet streaming.
What if I don’t want to listen to an article?
The memory stick players all have the ability to fast forward to miss an article or rewind ito listen to it again.
What if I go away on holiday?
You can stop and start your Talking Newspaper at any time by contacting your local Talking Newspaper.
